cientists at Northwestern University announced new technology for Canon BP-911 Charger batteries that could last 10 times as long and charge 10 times as fast as they do today. What would it be like to charge your laptop from empty to full in 15 minutes?

How does it work? Well, lithium-ion OLYMPUS EVOLT E-410 Digital Camera batteries consist of layers upon layers of graphene, sheets of carbon atoms just one atom thick. Lithium ions occupy the space between these layers, and creep from layer to layer as the battery charges or empties. The Northwestern scientists, led by Professor Harold Kung, made two discoveries. Second, Professor Kung’s team decided to perforate the graphene sheets. If charge time is limited by how quickly ions can move from layer to layer, why not give them a shortcut? The researchers drilled millions of tiny holes (around 20 nanometers wide) in the sheets, allowing the ions to flow more freely. That means power can be pumped much more quickly into the Compaq Presario nx9010 Battery, allowing it to be fully charged in just minutes.
The downside to the new technique is that the comPAQ Presario CQ61-100 Laptop AC Adapter battery is more susceptible to degradation: after about 150 charge cycles, or about a year of operation, the capacity and charging speed start to diminish sharply. High school principal rebuts simple battery charge

Chattahoochee High School’s principal on Wednesday denied allegations that he slammed a middle school student against the wall in anger — accusations that have him facing a simple battery charge.
But Timothy Duncan told his side of the story to the media outside a Fulton County courtroom, not to a judge as was expected Wednesday.
Earlier, State Court Judge Victoria D. Moran, dell inspiron 6000 battery with a hint of a reprimand, had warned Duncan about the perils of representing himself when he initially attempted to proceed without a lawyer. She postponed the hearing until Jan. 4.

“They were in an area where they should not have been,” said Duncan. “I believe my response was justified. I acted appropriately. The students and parents of Chattahoochee know me well. They know I am not capable of doing the things I have been accused of.”
Samantha Evans, a spokeswoman for the Fulton County Schools, said investigations by the system’s employee relations department and the Department of Family and Children Services found no reason to discipline Duncan.
But an investigator with the Fulton County Schools Police Department, wrote in the incident report that after interviewing witnesses and watching video Dell Latitude c610 battery of the incident captured by security cameras, he found probable cause to sustain a charge of simple battery, a misdemeanor, against Duncan.
Theresa Thomas, White’s mother, said she is disturbed about how the school system and the county has handled the case.

Redesigned lithium ion IBM battery charges faster

Engineers from Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science discovered a way to redesign today’s lithium ion cells, IBM ThinkPad T42 battery which are used in a number of consumer electronics, to address two major problems with today’s batteries: energy capacity and charging time.
“We have found a way to extend a new lithium ion battery’s charge life by 10 times,” explained Harold H. Kung, professor of chemical and biological engineering at McCormick and lead author of the research paper. “Even after 150 charges, which would be one year or more of operation, the battery is still five times more effective than lithium ion batteries on the market today.”
The team was able to do this by making changes to the material used in a battery and the way ions travel within a cell.
Understanding how lithium ion batteries work
To better understand the technology, it’s helpful to know how lithium ion batteries work in the first place. As soon as you engage your smartphone, tablet, or some other device, a chemical reaction takes place where the lithium ions move from one end of the IBM ThinkPad T43 battery (called the anode) to the other end (called the cathode) of the battery. During this process, the ions are traveling through the electrolyte and giving off an electrical charge to the device. When you recharge the battery, the ions travel in the opposite direction, going from the cathode back to the anode.
The problem with today’s batteries
The current design of lithium ion batteries presents two big problems, however. The first is that the number of ions that can be packed into the anode or cathode is IBM ThinkPad T60 battery limited, which affects how long a battery can maintain its charge. The second issue is that there can be a delay in how fast the ions travel from the electrolyte back to the anode, thus affecting the recharge time. The culprit of both these predicaments? The material used to make the anode.
By creating miniscule holes in the graphene sheets, lithium ions can travel faster back to the anode and speed of charging time.

The anode consists of layers of carbon-based graphene sheets. As it currently stands, the anode can only accommodate one lithium atom for every six carbon atoms, which isn’t very much, so scientists have tried replacing carbon with silicon, which handle four lithium atoms for every silicon atom. That said, problem with silicon is that it IBM ThinkPad R52 battery expands and contracts dramatically during the charging process and causes fragmentation.
On the charging issue, the shape of the graphene sheets slows down the whole process. The sheets are thin but very long, and the lithium ions need to travel to the outer edges first before entering and settling between the sheets. However, as researchers explain, since it takes so long for the ions to make their way back to the middle, an “ionic traffic jam” occurs and slows down the charging rate.
A fix
The engineers at Northwestern came up with a solution for these problems by recreating the anode using a graphene-silicon design. By sandwiching silicon clusters between the graphene sheets, the anode can accommodate more lithium atoms, while the flexibility of the graphene can combat the silicon’s fragmentation.
In addition, the team used a chemical oxidation dell xps m1210 battery process to create miniscule holes in the sheets, so the lithium ions could travel faster back to the anode. The result of all this was a 10x increase in recharge time.
What’s next?
Though all the focus was on the anode this time around, the group from Northwestern say it will work on the cathode next to increase the effectiveness of batteries and aim to improve the electrolyte system so the battery will automatically shut down at higher temperatures. The latter pertains more to electric cars and is viewed as a safety mechanism.
Researchers say that we could see the new battery technology hit the marketplace in the next three to five years. I’m sure more than a few mobile device users will agree with me when I say, that day can’t come soon enough.
