&#8220;An abnormally high internal cell temperature is a nearly universal manifestation of something going awry with the cell,&#8221; says Rengaswamy Srinivasan, a chemist in APL&#8217;s Research and Exploratory Development Department and one of the inventors. &#8220;These changes can occur within seconds, leading to a potentially catastrophic event if corrective measures are not taken immediately. When things start to go wrong inside the cell, time is not on your side.&#8221;<br />
Srinivasan and his colleagues discovered that a very small alternating current, when applied to a lithium-ion <strong><a href="http://www.buy-laptop-battery.org/dell-latitude-d430-ac-adapter.htm" target="_blank">Dell latitude d430 ac adapter</a> </strong>battery at specific frequencies, is modified by the cell in a way that is directly related to the temperature of the critical electrochemical interface between the electrodes and the electrolyte.<br />
&#8220;We discovered that we can measure the temperature of the protective layers between the electrodes and the electrolyte of the battery during normal operation,&#8221; Srinivasan says. &#8220;These layers are where the conditions that lead to thermal runaway and catastrophic cell failure begin. This discovery enables us to detect potentially unsafe thermal conditions before surface-mounted temperature sensors, which are the current state of the art, are able to register that any change has taken place.&#8221;<br />
The sensor operates through a simple electrical connection at the positive and negative terminals of the cell and can operate using power from the <strong><a href="http://www.buy-laptop-battery.org/toshiba-pa3331u-1brs.htm" target="_blank">toshiba pa3331u-1brs battery</a> </strong>it is monitoring. <p>These describe how fuel cells could be built into electronics devices and managed to optimize performance while keeping weight down.</p>
<p>&#8220;Hydrogen fuel cells have a number of advantages. Such fuel cells and associated fuels can potentially achieve high volumetric and gravimetric energy densities, which can potentially enable continued operation of portable electronic devices for days or even weeks without refueling,&#8221; reads one of the applications.</p>
<p>&#8220;However, it is extremely challenging to design hydrogen fuel cell systems which are sufficiently portable and cost-effective to be used with portable electronic devices.&#8221;</p>
<p>The idea of using fuel cells for portable devices has been around for some time &#8211; Hitachi produced a methanol-based prototype back in 2003, for example. But while most existing versions are designed as separate charging devices, Apple&#8217;s planning to incorporate them right into the laptop itself.</p>
<p>&#8220;This eliminates the need for a bulky and heavy <a href="http://www.battery-store.co.uk/batt-4-camera.htm">digital camera battery</a> within the fuel cell system, which can significantly reduce the size, weight and cost of the fuel cell system,&#8221; the second patent application reads.</p>
